Globally speaking, there has been a renewed interest in women’s sport. This general push to spotlight and showcase women’s sport has in turn inspired an entire generation of female athletes. 

Over 1 billion people tuned in to watch the 2019 women’s football world cup. Furthermore, in 2020 the T20 women’s world cup broke a viewership record as it became the most watched female sporting event ever! An Incredible 1.1 billion watched the tournament worldwide. Even as recent as ten years ago, these kind of statistics would have been considered unimaginable.  

The viewership of women’s sport has been increasing year by year and as a direct result of this; the overall investment in women’s sport has drastically increased.  Professional women’s sports such as football, basketball, cricket, professional racing and many more have seen significant investment from sporting bodies around the globe. Experts advise that in the UK alone, women’s sports will generate over £1 billion by the year 2030. 

Sport is a fantastic way for women and girls to stay active, meet new friends and improve their overall wellbeing. In addition to this, sport, especially professional sport, offers a fantastic platform for women to make their voices heard. Sports stars such as Serena Williams and Megan Rapineo are just some of the stars to highlight modern issues facing women.
