Celebrating International Women’s Day
International women’s day is a campaign close to our hearts as it celebrates women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements and marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. The theme for 2023 is #EmbraceEquity which highlights the need to offer more than equal opportunities to create true inclusion. We were delighted to attend two incredible IWD events in the local community; Crewe Women’s Day, run by Motherwell Cheshire and the Embrace Equity Fair, hosted by Staffordshire University.
It was an honour to have WPS co-founder Amaka as a guest speaker at the Staffordshire University event on Wednesday 8th March, talking about her experiences as a woman in a male dominated environment and giving inspiring insight into her time in the Nigerian military. The topic of her talk, ‘Gender Main-Steaming in the Military: Equality or a Box-Ticking Exercise?’ explored important topics such as a cycle of exclusion and changing the narrative.

There were also fantastic presentations from Ravinder Kaur, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Staffordshire University, who explored The Gender Pay Gap and Esra Simsek, a Data Scientist, who gave her insights on balancing motherhood and working life.
Amaka was joined at the event by some of our incredible volunteers to chat to attendees about the work WPS has been doing in the local community and encourage people to attend our upcoming events in support of our mission to improve women’s safety across the area.
